I remember being a traveler in my early 20s and kind of scoffing at people who thought hostels were a little too 'rustic' or 'wild' for them. I loved the communal aspect of it all, the way it was usually full of like-minded people, and the wonderful chats you'd have with strangers around the communal areas.
Well, now I'm in my early 30s and although I've got nothing against staying at hostels, I much prefer to stay in a B&B. I think it's the adult version of a hostel; you still have great conversations with strangers (usually in the dining room during breakfast), and it's still usually full of like-minded people (although the age range is a little older). But there's just something more....comfortable....about B&Bs than there is about hostels.
Or maybe I'm getting precious in my older age.
But take our current B&B - the Ashbury House in the Glebe, Ottawa - as an example. It's cheaper than a hotel (although granted, much more than a hostel), and the stay includes the most delicious gourmet, homemade breakfast served in a grand dining room with fancy china! The house absolutely stunning at over 100 years old, is beautifully furnished and decorated, and is one block away from the house I grew up in. We can come and go as we please, we have all the comforts of home, and the owners are absolutely wonderful (seriously the cutest couple EVER - he started Canada's space program and she worked for the World Bank, they lived in 44 different countries and are just as friendly as can be - talk about a power couple!! - and they have such a great sense of humour!!). We had a great conversation with the other guests over homemade pancakes with strawberry compote this morning, and last night slices of homemade apple pie were left in our room for us!
I'm seriously convinced that B&Bs are the way to go these days! I couldn't be enjoying our stay here more if I tried.
