very exciting news

As some of you know, I'm Canadian.

And I am very proud to be Canadian.  I love my country.  It is where I grew up.  It is where I formed my social and political values.  It is the root of my cultural identity.

However, biologically, I am also half Australian.  My mother is Canadian, but my father was born Australian (he gave up his citizenship before I was born, and is now a naturalized Papua New Guinean; where I'm originally from, so I have never been an Australian citizen).  I have spent my entire life traveling to Australia every coupe of years, to visit my family.  I have just moved here, and almost a year ago I started the process of obtaining my Australian citizenship.

And yesterday, I GOT IT

I received a beautiful email that told me my application had been accepted, that my working holiday visa was null and void, and that I am now officially a dual Canadian-Australian!  My citizenship card will be arriving by priority post within the next few days!

  2. No ceremony or anything. Just a piece of paper in the mail.

  3. Yay - congratulations!! Wonderful news that you will be able to call two fantastic countries home for as long as and whenever you wish. Surely this calls for a good Aussie celebration? A bbq by some beautiful Sydney beach with lots of wine and beer...

  4. Congratulations, Eliza!!! That's very exciting news. I have two passports as well {maybe three next year??!} but I have to admit that my Canadian one is closest to my heart. Even though I live in France now, I feel exactly how you do about Canada. Those first sentences in this post made me tear up a teeny bit!

But let's go back to talking about celebration. I think you need to have a day where you wake up, make pancakes that you douse in maple syrup, then you listen to a lot of Barenaked Ladies. Later on, you throw some shrimp on the barbie, drink a VB or two & watch "Crocodile Dundee". Sounds good?

Just wish I wasn't so far away, because I'd love to join you for your CDN/AUS day! XOXOXO!
