sad days of joy

This was my road trip to the memorial service.  Sad because dear Ian is no longer with us.  Joy because his life was celebrated.  The beginning of goodbye.  A photographic stream of consciousness.

Sad for all the conversations we'll never have.
Grateful for the ones we did have.

Late night winter walks on campus, keeping an eye out for the dear.

Dragging you through the snowy courtyard by your feet.
We lose a boot in the process.
I was not neglecting you.

My road companions: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bon Jovi, and Eminem.
I can't touch Van Morrison yet.

In life you were my platonic soul mate.
In death you'll be my guardian angel.

I talk to you.  I probably always will.
I swear at you, too.

Approximately 1600Kms round trip.
I would drive 1000 times more than that for you.

Are we still a "we"?

You're better at forgiving than I am.

Sometimes it's impossible to see the silver lining.
And that's okay.

Stuck behind the inevitable log truck.

"Just joking," you say, with a pat on my knee.

With every end comes a new beginning.

The start of moving forward, with a changed heart.
