I was at the doctor's getting an ultrasound for my finger today (that's a whole other story), when I happened into a sort of awkward position. The lady doing the ultrasound asked me what my job was, and I said "well, for the last year I've been an administration assistant, but I lost my job in December". Her eyes went wide, and she said - incredulously - "You lost your job?!", and I replied "Yep.". She then asked me how and why.
How? Why? That wasn't any of her business! I think the losing of one's job is a somewhat private situation, and I don't think it's a stranger's place to ask!
Suddenly I started feeling embarrassed and ashamed.
I just replied that it was a long story and I didn't wish to get into it.
But let me tell you, I certainly didn't engage in small talk with her the rest of the hour I was there.
I think it's only a natural follow-up question, I'd ask why too, before thinking much about it.
ReplyDeleteYou're completely right, Sarah, and I'd probably ask why too, without much thought. I guess it's more the *way* in which she asked it that I object(ed) to.
